Description

Extroardinary gales occur in the Himalayan valley near the end of winter. Three gales were recorded during our 4 years of meteorological observations in the Nepal Himalayas. Each gale was northerly and seemed to be a foehn wind crossing the Himalayan chain from the Tibetan Plateau. Two of the gales were closely associated with abrupt changes of the flow pattern of the upper westerly, but it is not clear in the last case. Cyclogenesis over the Himalayan is considered to be a necessary condition for the occurrence of a gale. The meteorological records and the upper flow pattern during the gales of February 1976 are shown in this paper.
