Abstract
A maximum flow rate of floating snow in an open channel is discussed with a theory and experiments. Snow, lighter than water, flows in an upper part of a channel, and water in a lower part. The mixture of snow and water occupies the upper part where the velocity is almost uniform. Assuming that the snow-water mixture is a Bingham fluid, the velocity profile in the channel is derived and the maximum flow rate of snow is calculated. The theory is found to be reasonable compared with the experimental results. This theory is applicable to the cases in which the slope of a channel is mild and the water depth is large.
