Description

A shear-frame type tension meter was constructed and tested together with a shear frame suggested by Sommerfeld (1984) and Canadian hardness meters. The size of new device (160 mm × 160 mm in frame size and 50 mm in height) is almost the same size of the shear frame but the device has three notch plates which give different fracture areas of 0.001, 0.0015 and 0.002 m2. Measured values of tensile strength of snow in Niigata Prefecture were different in snow types, giving 1% significance after F-test. Simultaneous measurements with three devices gave more than 0.7 in correlation coefficients among the tensile strength, the shear strength and the hardness of snow at Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture.
