In this study, an effective corrosion detection technique, using the cylindrical typed electromagnetic acoustic resonance (EMAR) wave technique, which can detected the inside corrosion of finned tubes in air-cooled heat exchangers has been developed. EMAR is a combination of the resonant technique and a non-contacting periodic permanent magnet electromagnetic acoustic transducer (PPMEMAT). The PPM-EMAT consists of hollowed cylindrical shape permanent magnet units wound around by a transmission coil and a reception coil. In the case of EMAT for the axial shear wave, it consists of a solenoidal coil in order to apply a static field along the finned tube and propagate the axial shear wave along the circumference of the finned tube with axial polarization. It is clarified that EMAR wave technique is the best corrosion detection tool for finned tubes in air-cooled exchangers.
