Based on down-core changes in abundance of Paralia sulcata during the past 30, 000 years, migration of continental mixed-waters in the northeastern East China Sea was revealed. Abundant occurrences of P. sulcata in the period from 16 to 9kyrs BP, with a positive peak around 13kyrs BP, suggest eastward progression of the waters. A negative peak in abundances around 23kyrs BP may represent a decrease in salinity or in salinity and temperature of the waters off to the west of the Kyushu Islands, and a rapid decrease in abundances after 9kyrs BP may be linked to westward retreat of the continental mixed-waters. Fluctuations in volume transport of the Tsushima current due to sea level changes and temporal variations in wind-stress field over the North Pacific have been distinguished as probable causes for the migration.
