As the basis for reconstruction of vegetation from fossil pollen assemblages, surface pollen samples were collected from tundra, forest tundra, and taiga distributed in the Russian Far East and north eastern Siberia. Obtained pollen assemblages were compared with surrounding vegetation around each sampling site. In tundra developed at Ambalchik, on the East Siberian Sea coast, herb pollen such as Poaceae, Compositae subfam. Carduoideae, and Caryophyllaceae occurred most abundantly, accounting for an average of 59 (39-85)% of pollens from 3 sites. Long-distance transport of Pinus subgen. Haploxylon yielded an average of 24 (6-48)%. When we compared the percentages of pollen Haploxylon from tundras distributed in Wrangel Island and the Chukotka Peninsula, the percentages tend to increase towards the south, where Pinus pumila is distributed. Although Salix was the dominant species in the tundra of Ambaltick, Salix pollen was less than 5% of total pollen and spores. From 10 sites in forest tundra at Plakhin Yar and Krasivoe, on the lower reaches of the Kolyma River, the total percentage of shrub pollen such as Betula, Alnus, and Ericales was an average of 56 (32-73)%. Larix pollen from open pure Larix forest accounted for an average of 21 (15-26)%. Transported pollen Haploxylon accounted for an average of 7 (1-20)%. Although Salix was dominant in forest tundra, pollen Salix accounted for an average of 0.8 (0.2-2.3)%. Herb pollen reached 34% in forest tundra. Pollen assemblages from 17 sites in taiga in the Yakutsk region, on the middle reaches of the Lena River, are characterized by high percentages of arboreal tree pollen. Among them Larix pollen yielded an average of 20 (1-45)%. Pinus subgen. Diploxylon accounted for an average of 40 (22-64)%. Pollen of Diploxylon were transported from Pinus sylvestris forest over a relatively short distance. Larix pollen was less represented in forest tundra and taiga compared with the distribution and stand density of Larix trees.
