It is generally assumed that the Yayoi Period, which marked the initiation of wet rice agriculture Japan, began around 300BC. However, the age is not as evident as one might assume. In this paper, I discuss the absolute ages of the periods between the Final Jomon Period and the Yayoi Period, based on the radiocarbon ages found in the literature. Only a small number of 14C dates are reported for the above periods, many of which are not suitable for analyses of ages because of inappropriate sample selection or possible mixing of layers in the remains. Moreover, most of the data reported have rather large errors, as they were obtained before high-precision AMS 14C dating was available. Judged from the very restricted data available so far, the boundary between the Jomon and Yayoi periods seems to be 750-400BC. This period is featured in the radiocarbon calibration curve by almost constant 14C concentrations, which make it difficult to precisely determine the ages. In order to establish a highly precise chronology of these periods, we need to make use of wiggle-matching techniques as well as high-precision measurements for as many sites as possible.
