説明

The age of the marine Pleistocene Shimosa Group ranges between 450, 000 and 80, 000 years, based on the correlation of dated marker tephras and comparison with the marine oxygen isotope curve. The Shimosa Group is chracterized by cyclic depositional sequences. Each formation boundary of the group corresponds to a low sea level period, as demonstrated by the existence of terrestrial deposits and unconformity. The standard stratigraphy of the Shimosa Group established in the Kisarazu-Anesaki region is applicable to the entire northern part of Chiba Prefecture based on the traces and the correlation of the tephras.<br>In the northeast part of Chiba Prefecture, the upper part of the massive silt layer which is considered to be the Kazusa Group is newly correlated with the Jizodo Formation. The depositional depth of the silt layer is deeper than that of the Jizodo Formation distributed to the southwest or further. Therefore, remarkable activity of the “Kashima” uplift zone was not noted in this district during the period of the Jizodo Formation. In addition, some regional differences of tilting are seen according to the distribution and structure of the Pleistocene. It is thought that these differences indicate the segmentation of the Kashima-Boso uplift zone. In particular, the northeast part of Chiba Prefecture tilted rapidly during the period of the Yabu Formation. The “Kashima” uplift zone became more active during the period of the Yabu Formation, and contributed to the formation of the barrier island system in this area.
