Palynological study was carried out using a 765-cm core taken from the bottom of Aranuma in the Shirataka Lakes, Yamagata Prefecture (38°14'N., 140°13'E.). This core contains tephras, As-YP, AT, Ad-N1, Za-Kw, and On-Ng. Sediments in this core accumulated for ca. 90, 000 years. The following pollen zones can be established:
S-1: Quercus-Ulmus+Zelkova-Tsuga zone
S-2: Pinus-Tsuga zone (before ca. 90, 000yrs BP)
S-3: Betula-Pinus-Tsuga-Quercus zone (ca. 90, 000-75, 000yrs BP)
S-4: Quercus-Fagus-Pterocarya+Juglans-Cryptomeria zone (ca. 75, 000-55, 000yrs BP)
S-5: Cryptomeria-Tsuga-Picea-Pinus zone (ca. 55, 000-45, 000yrs BP)
S-6: Betula-Picea-Pinus-Tsuga zone (ca. 45, 000-40, 000yrs BP)
S-7: Quercus-Fagus-Betula zone (ca. 40, 000-28, 000yrs BP)
S-8: Betula-Quercus zone (ca. 28, 000-25, 000yrs BP)
S-9: Betula-Picea-Tsuga zone (ca. 25, 000-12, 000yrs BP)
S-10: Quercus zone (ca. 12, 000-1, 000-1, 500yrs BP)
Subzone S-10a: Betula subzone
Subzone S-10b: Fagus subzone
S-11: Fagus-Quercus zone (ca. 1, 000-1, 500-present)
Because S-2 and S-3 were accompanied by cool-temperate taxa such as Quercus, Pterocarya+Juglans, and Ulmus+Zelkova, these zones were identified as the temperate coniferous forest stage. Cryptomeria japonica was a main element in temperate forests in the late part of S-4 and the whole of S-5. S-6 and S-9 are correlated to very cold stages. The vegetation of these zones was dominated by boreal conifers. S-6 probably corresponds to MIS-4. Temperate broad-leaved forest consisting of Fagus and Quercus expended in S-7, which was a relatively warm stage. S-10 and S-11 are the Holocene.
The results for Aranuma were compared with the pollen zones of each site in the southern Tohoku district. Although the forest composition and the vegetation history were slightly different, the following facts are recognized: Cryptomeria japonica forests occupied the southern Tohoku district during the early glacial period. Subsequently, most areas of this district were covered by boreal coniferous forests. Several temperate broad-leaved trees expanded their distribution 30, 000 to 40, 000 years ago.
