説明
The effect of addition of molybdenum and nickel, which are added as alloying elements for improved hardenability, on the impact and tensile properties of ductile iron with duplex matrix has been studied. When a ferritic iron is austenitized at 900°C for a short period and then austempered at 400°C, yielding about 50% volume fraction of bainite, the impact energy is at its best. In both unalloyed and alloyed irons, the energies are markedly higher compared with those of tempered and air-cooled structures.
Excess molybdenum of over 0.2% does harm to the toughness and ductility, causing carbides to be retained at cell boundaries, while nickel is effective in promoting homogeneous distribution of bainite around the graphite nodules as well as producing fine duplex matrix.
Crack initiation is retarded by the bainite formed around the graphite nodules. At low temperatures the retardation is more effective with harder bainite. At high temperatures it is more effective with milder bainite.
