Description

Three-dimentional solidification analysis was performed for investment castings and a method for predicting the shrinkage formation by computing the “F-value”, defined as the sum of solid fraction gradients, was proposed. The calculated F-values for the casting models of a compressor vane, a turbing blade and a impeller with shroud were evaluated with respect to the shrinkage porosity observed in the real castings so as to determine the critical F-value. It was found that the F-values below which the local shrinkage porosity formed were dependent on the alloy composition, e. g., 0.2cm−1 for 17-4PH steels and 13Cr stainless steels, and 0.1cm−1 for vacuum-melted nickel-base superalloys.
