Molten irons containing anti-spheroidizing elements, such as Cu, Pb, Sn and Se, were treated with Mg, and the interfacial energies of the melts to specific planes of graphite crystal were measured using the sessile drop technique. In the molten irons containing Cu and Pb treated with Mg, the interfacial free energy ratios of single crystalline graphite were higher than those of polycrystalline graphite when the irons reached the measuring temperature. With holding time, the ratios of single crystalline graphite were lowered and became lower than those of polycrystalline graphite, but the differences were little. These irons had mostly spheroidized graphites. In Sn-containing Mg-treated molten iron, the ratio of polycrystalline graphite was slightly higher than that of single crystalline graphite. The iron had spheroidized graphites and flake graphites. In Se-containing Mg-treated molten iron, the ratios of poly- and single-crystalline graphite were almost the same as those in the Se-containing untreated molten iron. Flake graphites are more stable than spheroidal graphites in the iron. The interfacial free energy ratio is, therefore, a deciding parameter of graphite spheroidization in cast iron.
