説明
A flat copper block (mold) covered with insulator except one surface was immersed in a bismuth melt and taken out during solidification. Irregular uneven thickness is observed at a few areas in a solid shell on a mold without grooves. Each thick area corresponds to a slight convex deformation of the shell surface towards the mold, suggesting a local contact with the mold. When a series of parallel or crosswise grooves are formed on a mold, the solid shell is thick at midway between the grooves and thin on the grooves. The unevenness is regularly distributed and hence, less severe than without grooves. The phenomenon is observed even with grooves as narrow as 0.05 mm. The effect of grooves to reduce uneven solidification was explained based on a numerical calculation of temperature change in the solidifying shell. Possible application of the finding was discussed in relation to casting surface quality.
