Abstract

The morphology of graphite and matrix in cast iron depends, in the common sense, on the chemical composition, melting and casting conditions and freezing behavior. However a bottleneck to establish the strict relationship has impeded further developments in the strength and rupture of cast iron. In this point of view, some variables of graphite governing the rupturing mechanism of cast iron were determined on the basis of the bending and tensile tests in a definite shape of test coupons.
It is found that the volume, form, orientation, and distribution of graphite are the appropriate variables which may govern the strength and rupturing mechanism of iron.
The “deep etching method” might satisfy the requirement identify the feature, size, orientation and distribution of graphite even more substantially, which included dissolving out the matrix deeply in the aqua regia and depositing copper over the graphite surface in the copper solution.
