One problem with austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron (ADI) is that the machinability has been found to be low in many cases. In this paper, influence of chemical composition and graphite nodule count on the machinability of ADI have been studied. The tensile strength, proof stress and elongation of ADI austempered at 684 K for 7200 s are increased with increasing Si content, where the hardness is held through unchanged. The machinability of ADI is considerably inferior because of the harder ausferrite, and especially because of the formation of hardened zone on the work-piece due to the transformation of unreacted austenite to martensite during turning. The machinability of ADI is improved by reduction in amount of unreacted austenite rather than the total retained austenite. Therefore, the ADI with high graphite nodule count shows a high machinability than the other irons with low nodule count.
