To produce partially composed metal matrix composites, namely discontinuous MMCs, spontaneous infiltration rats were measured. The preforms of SiC particles were infiltrated without pressure using spheroidal and flake graphite cast iron melts. The preforms were fabricated using a furan resin and waterglass as the binder containing CuO, Cu2O and Fe2O3 powders for improving their wettability between the melt and SiC preform.
15 g of the waterglass bound preforms, sintered at 1173 K before infiltration, and the furan bounded preforms were inserted into a Tamman tube with an inside diameter of 15mm for infiltration. A cast iron sample weighing 40 g was placed on the preform and then infiltrated in an electrical furnace and heated up to 1773 K within 90 min.
The furan resin bound preforms with Cu2O powder resulted in complete infiltration without pressure at 1720 K. The waterglass bound preforms showed poorer infiltration results than that of the furan sampled due to waterglass remains after infiltration. The graphite morphology of the spheroidal cast iron was found to change into flake with infiltration by the chemical reaction of Ce with the oxide.
