Abstract

Such magnetic properties as coercivity, residual flux density and saturation flux density of austempered ductile irons were measured to achieve an inspection method for microstructures. The irons having a chemical composition of pearlitic ductile iron to which a small amount of Mo and Ni had been added were austenized at 850°C and austempered at 375°C to check the amount of pearlite and at 220°C to 440°C to check the amount of residual austenite. Measuring magnetic properties is applicable as an effective inspection method for estimating the volume ratio of detrimental pearlite in the matrix of austempered ductile iron. The isothermal transforming temperature and the volume ratio of residual austenite of ductile iron austempered at 300°C to 400°C are also estimable by this method.
