Since cerium and magnesium treated spheroidal graphite cast iron were developed in England and in U. S. A., the studies were proceeded in the preparing process of spheroidal graphite cast iron with calcium which is found in abundance in Japan.
The comparative study has been made regarding the physical and chemical properties of calcium and the conventional adding elements such as cerium and magnesium in order to determine the characteristics of calcium as an additional metal. The typical features which have been found are:
(1) Both calcium and magnesium have little solubility in iron, but have particular vapour pressures, and which of latter is further more.
(2) Concerning physical properties, cerium has similar properties with calcium except the higher specific gravity. The potential problem will involve possible solubility of cerium in iron.
The characteristics of calcium as an additional metal, therefore, have been defined on the bases of solubility in iron and vapour pressure. The course of preparing process of calcium spheroidal graphite cast iron has been formulated simultaneously. For example, when the powdered calcium-silicon which is coated with the cerium compounds is applied, spheroidal graphite cast iron with the tensile properties of 40kg/mm2 or more can be obtained. This process has been developed in the industrial scale.
