Description

This paper reports on the outlines of (1) development of headbox, an important elemental technology in this study, and (2) paperforming test on the pilot plant.
Photographs of the pulp suspension jets from several “saw blade type” headboxs were taken under strobe light, and the stability of the jets were estimated by an image processing analysis.
Pilot plant tests were conducted with the condition of 0.7% to 3% headbox consistency and 600 m/min wire speed. Influences of jets' stability and pressure loss of headboxes to the formation of sample sheets were examined. Quality of the sheet samples (sheet formation, strength, printability etc.) and process data (energy consumption, retention etc.) are described and discussed. Several sheets were found to be of commercial printing paper grade.
