Abstract

This report provides a comparative study of compositions of methanol extractives from unbleached kraft pulp and from its original wood in order to object the basic data on the chemical changes in wood resin and resin balances during kraft pulping. The results may be summarized as follows.
(1) Alkali soluble compositions of methanol extractives of wood hardly remained on pulp.
(2) All of neutrals of methanol extractives of wood were completely saponified.
(3) Almost all of unsaponifiable materials remained in pulp, and the unsaponifiable material content in pulp increased more than twice of that in wood.
(4) Wood species that always cause pitch problems during kraft pulping had much more unsaponifible materials than any other woods, which occasinally do or don't cause them.
(5) As far as the pitch problems are concerned, the applicability of wood species as raw materials for kraft pulping may be evaluated by the amount of unsaponifiable materials in wood.
