Description
The wire method for calibrating thermocouples, having been developed only with wires of Au, Pd and Pt, is studied furthermore, for the purpose of extending its utility to calibrations with wires of other metals. Pt-PtRh thermocouple as well as chromel-alumel thermocouple is found to be calibrated with Zn wire with the accuracy of 0.2 deg and with Pb wire with the accuracy of 0.2 deg., respectively. All other wires are also utilizabe for Pt-PtRh thermocouple with the accuracy of 0.5 deg and, if rapid heating is applied, for chromel-alumel thermocouple, too. Cu wire, so far as it is used with nitrogen purge, is useful as well, with the accuracy of 0.5 deg. Ag wire, easily affected by alittle lowering of plateau temperature due to the solution of oxygen into wires, is not considered to be suitable for the present purpose. Inter-laboratory comparison of the results of calibration with Zn, Pb and Al wires has shown satisfactory agreement.
