抄録

Cotton linters were immersed in acetic acid aqueous solutions of various sulfates containing metallic ion or ammonium ion. The excess imbibition-acid was removed by suction and dried, and then the resultant cellulose containing 2% catalyst was acetylated with acetic anhydride at 98±2°C.
Cotton linters impregnated with the catalysts such as Cd-, Zn-, or Al-sulfate or Fe-alum were acetylated to triacetyl cellulose smoothly within 8min, and those impregnated with (NH4) 2SO4, NH4HSO4, (NH4) 2S2O8 or Mohl's salt were similarly acetylated within 25 minutes.
The acetylation reaction was accelerated, when the concentration of acetic acid in the pretreatment solution was 80-90%, and the reaction was retarded when the concnatration was more or less than 80-90%. The reaction was accelarated when the dielectric constant of the catalyst salt in the pretreatment solution was large except for Zn- and Al-sulfates. For the sulfates containing Fe or NH4 cation, the reaction became faster as the salts ccntained a larger amount of SO4--.
It was found that the degree of polymerization of the acetates was markedly dropped due to the high reaction temperature. The acetylation reaction proceeded heterogeneously with the formation of triacetyl Cellulose II.
