抄録

Graft copolymers were prepared by irradiating polyethylene films or powder in the atmosphere of vinyl chloride with a Co60 source.
Physical and physicochemical properties, such as tensile strength, modulus, dynamic loss, thermal flow, stress cracking, gas permeability, clarity and dielectric loss, of the graft copolymer were measured and compared with those of polyblends.
Effects of grafting vinyl chloride to low density polyethylene are as follows.
1) Physical properties of polyethylene are highly reinforced by grafting compared with by blending.
2) The maximum temperature of mechanical loss of polyvinyl chloride in graft copolymer is lowerd than that of polyvinyl chloride itself, whereas that of polyblend scarcely shifts.
3) The gas permeability of graft copolymer decreases with increasing graft percent.
4) The graft copolymer (only 4% grafted) shows more remarkable crack-resistivity than the parent polyethylene.
5) Although the clarity of graft copolymer in film shows little change compared with the parent polyethylene, that of film processed by hot press has been improved remarkably.
Some properties of graft copolymers prepared from high density polyethylene have also been clarified.
