Mold shrinkages of the plates molded by a high density PE (240l×80w×2t mm in the cavity size) were measured in the machine directions (MD) and the transverse directions (TD). Effects of molding conditions on mold shrinkages, thicknesses and densities were examined.<BR>Mold shrinkages vary with the position measured on the plates and with the weight of them. The minimum shrinkage takes place at the weight at which the maximum pressure appears in the cavity. The maximum pressure is decided by the clamp force of the machine and the projected area of the cavity. A little effects of molding conditions on the minimum shrinkages can be seen in MD, but a lot of ones can be done in TD. The minimum shrinkages in TD increase with increasing cylinder temperature, mold temp erature, injection pressure and injection speed and with dec reasing clamp force and holding pressure time respectively. Changes in molding conditions mentioned above lead to decrease the anisot ropy of mold shrinkages.<BR>Under the same conditions of cylinder temperature and mold tempe rature, mold shrinkages in TD can be related to the dwelling time of resin pressure at each positions in the cavity and can be shown as two straight lines which cross each other at the solidification time.<BR>It is evident from the mentioned above that mold shrinkages are closely related to pressure behaviors of the resin in the cavity. We cannot neglect them when mold shrinkages will be discussed.
