Description

The photodimerization of α-phenylmaleimides (PMI) was applied to the polymers prepared by the methods shown below so they had PMI groups in the side chains: a) a copolymer of p-aminostyrene was treated with phenylmaleic anhydride, b) polystyrene or poly (benzyl methacrylate) was heated with N-chloromethyl-α-phenylmaleimide (CMPMI) in the presence of zinc chloride, c) a copolymer of maleic anhydride was treated with 2- (α-phenylmaleimido) ethylammonium p-toluene-sulfonate in the presence of triethylamine, and d) poly (vinyl alcohol) was heated with CMPMI in dimethylacetamide. The polymers thus prepared show λmax at 340-345 nm and become insoluble by the irradiation of light of its wavelength shorter than ca. 410 nm. The polymers are highly photosensitive; the sensitivity of the polymer that is modified from poly (benzyl methacrylate) and bearing 10 mol% PMI is approximately equal to that of poly (vinyl cinnamate) sensitized with 5-nitroacenaphthene. Studies were made on the sensitization and the storage stability of the polymers.
