Description

The theory of Flory and Abe for the liquid crystal formation of rigid rod-like macromolecules in solution has been extended to include a Schulz-Zimm distribution of axial ratio. The critical concentrations υ2* of A point at which the phase separation to the isotropic phase and the liquid crystal phase occurs have been calculated as functions of the mean axial ratio. The υ2* values at the same axial ratio for the Schulz-Zimm distribution have intermediate values between those for the Poisson distribution and for the most probable distribution. The calculated υ2* value decreases remarkably with the increase in axial ratio, but the experimental value varies more gradually. The apparent axial ratio decreases owing to the flexibility of rod-like macromolecules in the higher molecular weight region. The effect of molecular weight distribution of the A point is remarkable in the case of theoretical calculation, but the experimental results suggest that the effect is relatively small.
