The response of polypropylene (PP), polycarbonate (PC), polystylene (PS), polyethylene (PE), propyleneethylene block copolymer (PPB), and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) sheets has been studies using an instrumented falling weight impac tester. Three modes of fracture occur: puncture failure, crack failure, and brittle fracture, depending on their ductility and mechanical properties. The puncture failure mode is always observed for PE and PC; it is a typical ductile fracture in which the falling dart penetrates the sheets. The failure of PP and PPB is apparently caused by a crack, which follows a local plastic deformation near the top of the falling dart; this is semiductile fracture associated with ductility and its strain rate dependency. The fracture load impact energy of these two fracture modes are affected by yield stress of the material; they increase linearly with increasing specimen thickness and diameter of the dart. The brittle fracture which is observed for PS sheets results from crack initiation at the top of the dart rapid radial growth without any plastic deformation. The impact energy is quite low for this type of fracture and it has no distinct relation with specimen thickness and diameter of the dart
