Description

A semi-batch process at an elevated temperature was found to be most effective for the industrial production of aqueous emulsions of ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (PEVAc) which are used as paints, adhesives, etc. In order to establish the optimum conditions for this process, a study was made on the selection of suitable emulsifying agents and the factors governing the copolymerization at about 70°C and under a pressure of about 20 kg/cm2. Although the copolymers obtained had several chain branchings, the film made from these copolymers had the same mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation) as the films made from usual PEVAc which were obtained by the redox polymerization at a lower temperature, and had higher molecular weights and relatively linear structures. Thus, this method is fundamentally suitable for the industrial preparation of PEVAc emulsions.
