A way to estimate the thermal conductivity of the unsaturated polyester (UP) composites containing from 20 to 60 vol% of the various microballoon (MB) by empirical formula is discussed. Furthermore, in order to determine these processes, temperature dependence on thermal conductivity and effects of the filler content on the thermal insulation properties and the mechanical properties were investigated experimentally. The thermal conductivity of the composites estimated by the following formula was found to colsely resemble the measured data.
λ'cm0+Vff0m0) -1/2 (Km+Kf) τ (1)
But in the case of Vf=0, Km is equal to Kf, so λm0 is usually larger than λf0. Here, λm0 and λf0= thermal conductivity of matrix and filler itself at 0°C (kcal/m ·h ·°C), respectively, Vf=volume content (vol%), Km and Kf=constants for thermal conductivity of matrix and filler (kcal/m ·h ·°C/°C), τ=temperature (°C). The thermal conductivity of UP composites filled with microballoon linearly decreased as increasing filler content and as rising temperature, silica MB (AFMB) metallized with aluminium was an exception. The thermal insulating properties of UP composites containing 60 vol% of plastic MB (PMB) improved extremely, because the density of these composites became 55% that of the matrix itself, but it reduced gradually along with the water absorbing capacity into the composites. The mechanical properties, such as compressive, bending and Izod impact strengths of these composites, generally decreased with increasing of filler content.
