Abstract

Bisphenol-A type epoxy resin was modified with silicone-epoxy block copolymers to improve the toughness of the cured resins. The two phase structure, in which silicone phase was dispersed in the epoxy matrix, was formed by the modification. The morphology of the silicone phase was strongly affected by the molecular weight of both the silicone and epoxy segments in the copolymer. Toughness of the cured resins increased with a decrease in the diameter of the silicone phase. When the diameter of the dispersed phase is less than 0.1μm, impact strength of the modified system increased up to 1.5 times that of unmodified resins. Micro-phase separation of the silicone block is thus effective for improving the toughness of cured epoxy resins.
