Description
In order to obtain anionic flocculant under an extremely high concentration of monomer, copolymerization of acrylamide and acrylic acid has been carried out. This provided a high rate of polymerization, where the polymerization could be accomplished within 10 minutes in batch scale. The products obtained were of ultra-high molecular weight, and were of high enough quality to be polymeric flocculants. To characterize the polymerization under high concentration, kinetic analysis was performed. The inter-molecular chain extension was found to be involved along with the normal polymerization process. The activation energies, 29.8kcal/mol, of polymerization and monomer reactivity were evaluated; these values were comparable with those reported in previous studies. A continuous reactor was tentatively constructed on the bench scale on the basis of the conditions obtained in the batch scale experiments. The reactor was made by modifying a steel belt conveyer; here uniform developing of the monomer solution onto the belt and deoxidization of monomer solution were essential. The continuous polymerization was successful: thus the polymerization could be done in the same manner on batch scale.
