Description

A photosensor based on a new principle was proposed by utilizing photoresponsive carbon electrode coated with photoresponsive polymer membrane. Glassy carbon plate was coated with a membrane of poly (styrenesulfonate) containing tris (2, 2′-bipyridine) ruthenium (II) complex, and was irradiated with visible light in acetonitrile solution containing methylviologen and tetraethylammonium perchlorate to give photocurrent. Selective cathodic photocurrent was obtained independent of the electrode potential, and the direction as well as the value of the photocurrent were not affected by the presence of oxygen. An open circuit photovoltage of ca. 310 mV was obtained with two coated carbon electrodes dipped into a photochemical cell composed of light and dark chambers.
