説明

Photoconductive and photodielectric properties of polymer thin films were studied, and the possibility of their application to a photo-sensor is discussed. Polymer ultra-thin films were prepared by means of RF sputtering technique in the range of thickness from 1000 to 9000Å. Polymers used as target materials were Powder of polycarbonate (PC), poly-N-vinylcarbazole (PVCz), and/or their mixture. The molecular structure of sputtered films was somewhat different from the original one, e. g., formation of conjugated double bonds and crosslinking between main chains. This structural change enhanced the dark and photo currents across the sputtered films by a factor of ca. 103, and caused a photocapacitance change of the films. It is concluded that the photocurrent is due to intrinsic carrier generation under the light excitation and depends on the light intensity in linear fashion. As for the PC sputtered film, the sensitivity of photocurrent was ca. 1 nA/mW, and the response time was estimated to be less than 0.1 ms. Therefore this film may be applicable to a photo-sensor.<BR>The photocapacitance change in sputtered films is caused by two mechanisms : the electronic polarization (the true photodielectric effect) and the migration loss due to conducting carriers. Even in the PC/PVCz hybrid films, the Maxwell-Wagner polarization could not be observed.
