The viscosity of the benzene solution of copoly (L-Leu, L-Met 97: 3) was reduced by the addition of ca. 8% of dichloroacetic acid (v/v of benzene). Fine fibers of the copoly (L-Leu, L-Met 97: 3) were obtained by spinning the viscous solution in i-propylalcohol at 65°C, stretching the fibers in hot water at 65°C and then treating them with hot roller at 110°C. This fiber was converted into the fiber of copoly (L-Leu, L-Met-S-methylsulfonium) by the treatment with 3% dimethyl sulfate in dioxane at 100°C for 2hr. The coexistence of a-helix and β-coil structures in the both fibers was found by means of X-ray diffraction and infrared spectra. The S-methylated fiber contains more a-helix structures than the original fiber owing to the transition from β-coli to α-helix during the treatment with dioxane. This structural change provides a decrease in the tenacity of the fiber, making the fiber a long-elongation type. Compared to the original fiber, the S-methylated fiber has a remarkably high dyeability to acidic dyes.
