Abstract
We tried to blend some series of Nylon with polycarbonate (PC) by using a new reactive compatibilizer, poly (allyl-co-maleic anhydride). In this system, since carbonate bonds of PC and amide groups of Nylon undergo transamination, the molecular weights should be expected to go down. And it has been very difficult to mold through melt blending. But here we succeeded in molding through melt blending by using the new compatibilizer. Four kinds of Nylon were used here. Amorphous nylon, Nylon 12, Nylon 6, and Nylon 66. The blend morphology was observed under a phase contrast microscope and an electron microscope. Crystallinity of the blends was studied by X-ray diffraction, and intermolecular interactions were also investigated by FT-IR. The results of phase contrast microscopy and the glass transition behavior, suggest that all these systems are immiscible. The blend homogeneity of Nylons with PC may follow this order; Amorphous nylon >Nylon 12> Nylon 6 >Nylon 66. The intermolecular interaction including chemical reaction in the blends also became weaker in the same order. Particularly in the blend of Nylon 66 /PC 5/5, we observed under the electron microscope a plastic dual strucrure, where PC is captured in the inlet phases of Nylon 66. Some reactivity between Nylon and the compatibilizer including chemical reaction of the main chain is also predicted by FT-IR.
