Description
In a model reaction of benzoic acid (II) with aniline (III) using thonyl chloride (I) as a condensing agent under the presence of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), hexamethylphosphoramide (HMPA), or a mixture of pyridine and NMP, benzanilide (IV) was formed rapidly in high yield. A direct polycondensation of isophthalic acid (Va) with aromatic diamines (VI) using (I) was studied. Polyamides (VII) with inherent viscosities up to 0.77 dl·g-1 were obtained in the same solvent systems as used in the above model reaction, and those up to 0.9 dl·g-1 in pyridine containing alkaline halide, such as LiCl, which was added in the course of polycondensation. Polyamides of relatively high molecular weight were also obtained from aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (V) and (VI) in HMPA with this reaction.
