Silicon-containing polymers having ferrocene or ruthenocene and acetylene units in the backbone were synthesized by two methods: (1) de-LiCl condensation method (reaction of bis (lithioethynyl) metallocenes with dichlorosilanes) and (2) catalytic condensation method (reaction of dihalometallocenes with diethynylsilane by a palladium catalyst). In the de-LiCl condensation, desired polymers were obtained with low polymerization degrees in tetrahydrofuran (THF), while higher molecular weights were observed by the use of N, N, N′, N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) / hexane as the solvent. The catalytic condensation depended on reactivity of a dihalometallocene and basicity of an amine, and the polymerization was successful with a diiodometallocene and a highly basic aliphatic amine. These polymers were highly heat resistant, and temperatures of 5% weight loss in TGA measurements were about 400°C.
