From the viewpoint of recycling of resources, polyurethane (PU) foams were prepared from waste vegetable oil. Acid values of aging oils were determined by the method according to JIS K3504. The acid value increased with increasing treating time in both cases of 100°C and 190°C. This fact was ascertained by the results of FT-IR measurement. PU foams were obtained by reacting the mixture of waste oil and polypropylene glycol with diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). A Si surfactant, Sn catalyst, and water were used as foaming agents. Compression and thermal properties of the PU foams were measured by using a tensile test machine and a differential scanning calorimeter. Compression strength (σy) and elasticity (E) of the PU foams increased with increasing acid value and MDI/Polyol ratio. However, σy and E decreased with increasing waste oil content (Oil/Polyol). Glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PU foams increased with increasing acid value, oil content, and MDI/Polyol ratio. These results indicate that waste vegetable oil could be used as a polyol for PU and that thermal and mechanical properties of PU were controlled by the kinds of waste vegetable oil and/or the acid value.
