New hole-transporting polymers (TPACA and TPDCA) were prepared by condensation polymerization of triphenylamine (TPA) and tetraphenyldiaminobiphenyl (TPD) with trans-cinnamaldehyde (CA) using p-toluenesulfonic acid as a catalyst. 1H-NMR spectra revealed that these polymers contained the double bonds which are necessary for photocrosslinking. TPACA and TPDCA showed thermal decomposition onset at 400r and glass transition at 196°C and 217°C, respectively, indicating that these synthesized polymers have superb thermal stability. The polymers are transparent in the visible region and electrochemically active. The polymer films with less than 300 nm thickness became completely insoluble by the irradiation of ultraviolet light as a result of photocrosslinking of polymer chains. EL devices of a bilayer type consisting of photocrosslinked TPACA or TPDCA as a hole transporting layer and a layer of electron transporting polymer showed higher luminance than those with non-crosslinked TPACA or TPDCA due to the higher possibility of recombination of the hole and electron, indicating that well-defined bilayer structures were accomplished using photocrosslinked polymers.
