The photoresponsive polymers bearing norbornadiene (NBD) moieties were synthesized without any insoluble gel production by the addition reaction of poly (glicidyl methacrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) with NBD carboxylic acid chlorides. The photochemical reaction of the polymers thus obtained were evaluated in the film state and indichloromethane solution. The photochemical valence isomerization of NBD moieties proceeded quantitatively to produce the corresponding quadricyclane (QC) groups at 15 min irradiation with UV-light in the film state. Both the photoisomerization of the pendant NBD moieties and the photochemical reversion of the resulting QC groups were strongly affected by the wavelength of the exposure light. The reversion from the QC groups to the NBD moieties was carried out using the tetraphenylporphyrinate Cobalt (II) (Co-TPP) as a catalyst. The reversion proceeded very smoothly. The observed rate constant plotted against the catalyst concentration showed a straight line. Therefore, the rate of reversion of the QC group was proportional to the product of concentrations of the QC group in the polymer and Co-TPP.
