Abstract

The sample weight is increased largely by ozone-oxidation for polyethylene prepared by γ-rayinduced polymerization in bulk. Two peaks appear in the GPC trace of the oxidized sample, and the ratio of the molecular weights of them is nearly 1: 2. The sample molecular weight decreased by further oxidation for γ-ray-polymerized PE, while the decrease was a little for linear polyethylene single crystals. These results lead to the conclusion that γ-ray-polymerized PE is composed of lamellar crystals with molecular chains folded very irregularly. The molecular weight of the final GPC peak for oxidized samples increases with the increase in polymerization temperature, and corresponds well to the X-ray long period. The dependence of the long periods on polymerization temperature is similar to that of the long period of solution-grown crystals on crystallization temperature. This indicates that the polymers crystallize simultaneously with polymerization by γ-ray. At higher temperatures, however, the polymers formed may crystallize in the cooling process after the polymerization.
