Abstract

By using an on-line system of a supercritical fluid chromatography and a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer, a mixture of n-paraffins with different carbon numbers has been separated and identified. Visible-ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy, which had been used frequently as a detector, could not detect any component of n-paraffins at all, and the usefulness of infrared spectroscopy could be confirmed. It was found that the ratio of CH stretching band intensity between the CH2 and CH3 groups and the vibrational frequency of a CC stretching band could be used as effective tools to identify the separated components in the mobile phase, since these quantities were systematically dependent on the carbon number of an n-paraffin component. Quantitative analysis was made to demonstrate the effectiveness of on-line SFC/FT-IR system in the concentration evaluation of each component in an n-paraffin mixture.
