Polystyrene samples containing different amounts of anthraquinone, ranging from 34 to 118 mg/g, were examined by an optical microscope during heating and cooling at constant rate. Spherulitic structures composed of needle-like anthraquinone crystallites were observed for samples of higher content of anthraquinone on heating and cooling, while star-like structures were observed for samples of lower content on heating. Spherulites which formed on cooling were larger than those which formed on heating. Nucleation was faster at lower temperatures, which may be the reason for the difference in size between spherulites obtained on cooling and those obtained on heating.
