Description

The polymerizations of ∈-acryloyl lysine (A-Lys) and ∈-methacryloyl lysine (M-Lys) were carried out in aqueous solutions by use of ammonium persulfate (APS), azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) or sodium metaperiodate (SMP) as an initiator, and the pH dependence of the rate of polymerization (Rp) was investigated. The pH dependence of Rp was found to be different from each other among monomers and initiators. In case of APS, Rp for A-Lys was proportional to the monomer concentration in acidic solutions, while to 1.5th power of the concentration in alkaline solutions; Rp for M-Lys was proportional to the monomer concentration regardless of pH. In case of AIBN, Rp for each monomer was proportional to the monomer concentration. In case of SMP, Rp for each monomer was proportional to 1.5th power of the cocnentration throughout the whole pH region investigated. Rp for each monomer in creased linearly with the square root of the initiator concentration. On the basis of these results, the characteristics of the polymerization reactions were discussed.
