Description

Morphological structure change in the water induced crystallization of poly (m-xylylene adipamide) was studied. Amorphous films obtained by quenching the polymer from melt were moistened at various humidities above 58% RH at 50°C and their cross sections were observed with a polarized microscope. At low humidities, spherulitic structure was formed over the cross section except the thin transcrystalline layer at the surface. As humidity increases, the transcrystalline layer becomes thick and each spherulite becomes larger. The process of the formation of these structures was analysed with the aid of the moisture regain change due to the crystallization. It was shown that the increase of the transcrystalline layer at high humidities is due to the increase of the rate of crystallization which causes the crystallization process to become influenced by the water diffusion process and thereby the occurrence of oriented crystallization.
