Description

Permeation rate and separation factor of n-buthylamine-water mixture through cellophane were measured by using pervaporation apparatus. Minimum permeation rate and maximum separation factor were obtained at water composition of about 40 and 60-70 wt%, respectively. This is because that the permeation rates of each component are depressed by the existense of other component. Paul's solution-diffusion mechanism in highly swollen polymer membrane was adopted for this pervaporation process and it was elucidated that drastic change in permeation rate of liquid mixture was not caused by the change in solubility. Diffusion coefficient-reciprocal of viscosity relationship suggests that the diffusion process of pervaporation can be explained in terms of hydrodynamic regime of liquid mixture. In addition, from the temperature dependence of ηD/T, it was infered that there would be a certain influence of polymer-liquid interaction on the energetics of transport.
