Mechanical and morphological properties were investigated on the films obtained by natural drying of the composite polymer latex, the surface and the core portion of which were poly (ethyl acrylate) and poly (methyl methacrylate), respectively. The two-layer structure composite polymer latex was formed by a two-stage heterogeneous polymerization using a K2S2O3-Na2S2O3 redox sytem in the presence of cupric ion as an accelerator, with stirring at 70°C. The minimum film forming temperature (MFT) of the composite polymer latex was greatly influenced by the composition of the polymer particles. Mechanical properties of the films formed from the composite latexes depended on the structure of the composite polymer particles. The tensile strength at 100% elongation of the composite polymer latex film was more than four times that of copolymer latex film having the same composition of PMMA/PEA=30/70.
