A variety of quaternary ammonium salts of crosslinked poly (4-vinylpyridine) resin were prepared from 4-vinylpyridine-divinylbenzene copolymer and either alkyl bromides of various chain length (C2-C16), aryl bromide, or aralkyl bromide. Using these resins as triphase catalyst, the Finkelstein reaction was carried out in an organic solvent-water system at a temperature of 102°C. The catalyst (degree of quaternization 70.7%) prepared from octyl bromide as alkylating reagent showed 90% yield in the reaction of octyl brimide with sodium iodide for 8 h. With some exceptions, the higher activities in the reaction were obtained by catalysts derived from alkyl bromides with the longer chain length. The apparent activation energy of the reaction determined in the temperature range of 65-91°C was 11 kcal/mol. An approximate optimum molar ratio of sodium iodide to octyl bromide was 10. It was recognized that the reaction rate increased linearly with increasing amount of catalyst. In a protic solvent-water system, the reactions tend to be accelerated with the increase in chain length of alkylating reagents. In an aprotic solvent-water system, catalysts containing alkylating reagents of less than C8 did not work well. Influence of counter ion on the efficiency of catalysts derived from alkyl halides (RI, RBr, RCI) was in the following order: Br>I>>Cl.
