Description

The electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole on an electrode coated with an insulated polymer film produces a highly conducting polymer alloy film of the polymer and polpyrrole (PPy). This process was applied to achieve highly anisotropic conductivity and high transparency in a polymer film, using an electrode with isolated conductive dot patterns. This patterned electrode was coated with polyvinylchloride (PVC) film, then PPy was mixed with PVC film on the parts in contact with the conductive dot patterns of the electrode. The resultant PVC/PPy alloy film is highly conducting in thickness direction, and completely insulated on both film surfaces, so the film exhibits novel anisotropic conductivity. The film has a high optical transparency when the patterned area in the film is small. A conductivity of 1 S/cm and transparency of 7356 were observed in 5 pm thick PVC film. By studying the relationships between the property and morphology of the patterned film, the mechanism of PPy pattern formation in PVC film is clarified.
