Description

Mechanism of membrane formation of ethylene-vinylalcohol copolymer (EVA) spread on water was investigated from the viewpoint of diffusibility of spreading solvent. In the case of N, N-dimethylacetamide as spreading solvent, which has high diffusion rate, gelation of polymer solution occured immediatly after sprea-ding. The relatively dense ultrathin membrane was obtained. On the other hand, in the case of H2O/IPA mixed solution as spreading solvent, which has low diffusion rate, the coagulation of polymer grew up and then the gelation occurred. Therefore, a relatively porous ultrathin membrane was obtained. On addition of LiCl into turbid EVA-N, N-dimethylacetamide solution, partial hydrogen bonding association of EVA was destroyed and the solution became clear. When a membrane was formed from the above clear solution, the uniformity of the ultrathin membrane was advanced and the rejection of the membrane increased.
